FULL BIO:

Far from lost and ready to be found, Brian Seymour is one of the most sincere performing songwriters that you have never heard of…think David Gray hailing from Asbury Park, NJ. Inside Seymour’s heartfelt folk-pop gems you can feel all the feels and stop the world from spinning four minutes at a time. Carrying a Ph.D. in the history of art, Seymour brings a unique perspective to the creative process, informing his finely-crafted lyrics that pack a punch without any pretense. With a career spanning 20 years, Seymour is a confident, seasoned performer who charms audiences and draws everyone in close with his whisper to a roar emotional vocal delivery. At the piano or the podium, Seymour guides us to our better selves with wit and wisdom.

Born in Paterson and growing up in Red Bank, Brian Seymour is Jersey through and through. Seymour’s career began with his debut A Thousand Tarzans (2000), that announced his brand of heartfelt smart-pop. “I love the raspy vocals and sampled techno pop flavor Seymour deploys on songs like “Memories of High School" and “Little One," first cousins to all the sensitive guy stuff David Gray's been up to lately. Also intriguing - Seymour's contrast of inner and outer voices on the jilted lover's lament “Cassandra" and a title track that's wry and propulsive in a Robyn Hitchcock kinda way." Jonathan Takiff, Philadelphia Daily News, December 2000; to Perfectly Wrong (2005), and Speak to Me of Young Love (2011). His live performances have lit up intimate venues from Boston to Atlanta as Seymour shifted time to family, grad school and art history education. Along the way, Seymour landed key placements in film and tv, as well as covers by diverse artists including Dan Tyminski of Union Station, party band Cowboy Mouth, and Philly punks Foxy Contin.

Don’t get him started telling stories, how he turned a pair of shows at the Viper Room into a lucrative national tv ad campaign, or about his month-long residency playing Tom Waits covers at the House of Blues in Shanghai.

Seymour’s LP American Courage, released in summer of 2023 and due out on vinyl release fall of 2024, is a career-defining moment of honest songwriting and powerful performances.

Things that were said:

“Well-crafted without succumbing to preciousness, witty without stooping to irony, Seymour's songs are as intelligent and biting as they come. It’s evident from the studied and confident stance of When I Was Blonde that Brian Seymour is no newcomer to the DIY game. Couched within the framework of a superbly produced album are 10 intense, finely honed songs that show Seymour to be a writer of serious vision in the vein of David Gray, Paul Westerberg and Elvis Costello in his ability to embed intelligent, incisive snapshots of thought in a crafty pop song." (The Performing Songwriter)

“I love the raspy vocals and sampled techno pop flavor Seymour deploys on songs like “Memories of High School" and “Little One," first cousins to all the sensitive guy stuff David Gray's been up to lately. Also intriguing - Seymour's contrast of inner and outer voices on the jilted lover's lament “Cassandra" and a title track that's wry and propulsive in a Robyn Hitchcock kinda way." (Jonathan Takiff, Philadelphia Daily News)

“Described as Dylanesque or even Springsteenian, Brian Seymour is attracting more and more attention for his songwriting prowess. but to compare him to great songwriters of prior generations would be misleading, as it implies that Seymour's music is anachronistic. His sound -- at least, since he has attracted major-label attention -- is updated with dance beats and cool organs. originally a Philly guy, Brian attracts a huge crowd in Boston and New York as well. (Joey Key, Digital City Philadelphia)

“Seymour is without doubt a talented singer and songwriter. His distinctive voice, evocative, intelligent lyrics blend easily with his instinctive pop sensibilities. More David Gray than David Wilcox, ‘A Thousand Tarzans' deserves to be heard". (Steve Hill, program coordinator, AEI Music Networks)

“Brian Seymour has recorded one of the best sounding discs from a local artist that we've ever received at Y100. The songs are strong, the production and performances are up to major label quality, and he seems to have the talent to bust out in a big way.” (Jim Mcguinn, pd, Y100)

“From his early acoustic based material to the more exciting new pop leaning songs, Brian is a musical force to be reckoned with both locally and nationally.”
(Bruce Warren, Program Director, WXPN)
